Burkhart Cemetery is a historic, community‑cared resting place that has served families in the Racine and Shoal Creek area for more than 175 years. Established in the mid‑1800s as the Burkhart family burying ground, it has grown into a peaceful sanctuary shaped by generations of stewardship, tradition, and love.

As a non‑endowed, 501(c)(13) nonprofit cemetery, we receive no state or county funding. Every aspect of care — from mowing to maintenance to long‑term preservation — is made possible through the generosity of families, volunteers, and neighbors who value this sacred place.

Burkhart Cemetery is overseen by a fully volunteer, unpaid Board of Directors. These individuals give their time and energy to ensure the cemetery remains a dignified, well‑maintained resting place for all who are laid to rest here.

Since the 1800s, Burkhart Cemetery has been cared for by the people who call this community home. Families have passed down the tradition of giving, volunteering, and honoring loved ones for more than six generations.

Today, that same spirit continues. Every donation, every hour volunteered, and every act of kindness helps preserve this historic cemetery.

Our Heritage

Burkhart Cemetery began as the “Burkhart Burying Ground,” a family plot provided by George W. and Jane Burkhart. Over time, additional land was donated or sold by families connected to the Burkharts and Gilstraps, creating the seven‑section layout still used today.

From hand‑cut mowing and community grave digging to the construction of early work buildings, the cemetery’s history reflects the dedication of generations who cared for it long before modern equipment or professional services existed.
